BINGING ON GILMORE GIRLS : A PARASOCIAL EXPLORATION OF FANS’ VIEWING BEHAVIORS - MA Thesis
This thesis uses Gilmore Girls fans as a case study to explore how binge-watching influences parasocial relationships and the distress of parasocial breakup. Longitudinal surveys conducted before and after the release of Netflix’s Gilmore Girls mini-series found that binge-watching was negatively related to parasocial relationship intensity, while stronger parasocial bonds correlated with greater breakup distress. Factors such as show affinity, viewer age, and social viewing also played a role, underscoring the need for further research on the social and emotional effects of binge-watching.
